THE MIRACLE OF A MELTED HEART

“And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19).

Society tells us to “follow your heart,” but scripture reveals a sobering truth: the human condition is fundamentally a heart problem. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God diagnoses the rebellious human spirit as having a “stony heart.”

Like a literal stone, a hardened heart is cold, dead, and unresponsive. You can pour truth over it, but it slides right off, leaving the inside completely dry. We can attend services and go through the motions, but without a radical transformation by the Creator, our hearts remain heavy, unyielding, and unable to receive His grace.

Unless a person surrenders wholly to the Lord, the heart will remain hard and stony.

A polished stone remains a rock underneath. Partial surrender: holding back control over your finances, relationships, or pride keeps your heart hard. You cannot give God access to the courtyard while keeping Him off the throne.  True transformation requires breaking the rock, which only happens when you fall upon Christ in absolute surrender.

God says “I will take… I will give.”

This is a divine heart transplant. When we surrender wholly, God performs a miracle that we are entirely incapable of doing ourselves:

God transforms us from the inside out by uniting our scattered affections so we love Him fully with one heart, replacing our tired willpower with His living power through a new spirit, and exchanging a hardened life for a tender heart of flesh that deeply feels and responds to His love.

“That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God (Ezekiel 11:20).

True obedience is never the cause of salvation; it is always the consequence of a changed heart. When the heart is stone, keeping God’s laws feels like a heavy, impossible duty. It feels like a chore. But when the heart is made of flesh, walking in His ways becomes a natural desire. We don’t serve God out of fear or empty obligation; we serve Him out of a deep, overflowing love.

The ultimate destination of total surrender is intimacy. God doesn’t just want your compliance; He wants you. He wants the fulfillment of the ancient covenant: “They shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
